Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away...Jimmy Miller (the lead
trumpet player, arranger and all around nice guy), had a vision of bringing
forth a musical group with a different kind of presentation and style.
This new musical group was called The Gringos. Originally stylized
after the Tijuana Brass, Jimmy set out to not only improve upon this musical
statement, but to create a much more all encompassing musical experience.
The band got its original start in 1963-64 while Jimmy was still in
high school. But with band members not taking Jimmy seriously, the
band didn't really solidify until that fateful day in April of 1970
when, Jimmy Miller, along with Donna Byrd (Lead Vocals) invited Steve
Jones (bass & vocals), Clyde Score (Drums & vocals) and Lynn Tivens
(Trombone & rhythm instruments) to become members of the band.
Two additional members from that first encounter Ramon Acevedo (Trumpet)
and John Tatum (Guitar & Vocals) rounded out the band those early days.
The group headed to Colorado in the summer of 1970 to learn to play and
perform together. During that summer Alan Harkrader (Keyboards,
Vocals, Guitar, & horns) was added to the band and Joe Vaughn (Guitar &
Vocals) replaced John Tatum.
When Ramon decided to leave the band in December of 1970, that set the
stage for Ty Newcomb (Trumpet) to round out the personnel of The
Gringos. |
